The plane flight simulator has earned a fairly well-deserved reputation over the years as one of the most punishing and unforgiving genres for newcomers to get into. In fact, flight simulators had become so complex on average that they almost warranted having their own college courses devoted to their study and mastery. While this level of intricacy appealed to a select few gamers, it gave most of us a giant headache that made us reach for the nearest Advil.

While I’ve always been a fan of the flying simulator games of the past, even in their overwrought complexity, I must say that I never was quite comfortable with the genre, at least not on the level that I am with most games. The majority of plane flight simulators just never seemed to contain that natural sense of connection between myself and the game, where everything felt inherently right, and the keyboard and mouse felt like an extension of myself, rather than an outward obstacle battling me at every turn.

That all changed with the release of the flying simulator Flight Pro Sim. Now before the hoards of hardcore flight sim fans reading this utter sacrilege decry the absence of overly obtuse gameplay, hear me out. Flight Pro Sim contains plenty of the complex mechanics and controls that long-time genre fans clamour for. If you like stepping into the cockpit of a 747 and having to hit 20 buttons and adjust 10 dials before you’re ready for takeoff, you will in fact be in heaven.

For the rest of us though, we mercifully have a choice. Rather than learning about aircraft to the extent that we could probably fly one in real life ourselves, we can automate many of the tasks that are overly time consuming or tedious to the average gamer, and enjoy the real meat of the genre which is, of course, flying the plane.

In addition, Flight Pro Sim features the largest selection of different aircraft available in any previous flying simulator game I’ve played. Several of the craft come with extremely simplified controls that make it a breeze for flying simulator newcomers to get up in the air hassle-free. After all, it doesn’t take many flips of a knob, or presses of a button to get a hang glider up in the air after all. These are not only simple ways to get flying, they also provide a different view, a different sense of speed, and most noticeably, a vastly different sense of control in comparison to the average button and lever filled aircraft.

The plane flight simulator can be a great teaching tool for younger gamers, and Flight Pro Sim caters perfectly to that set by including such enjoyable aircraft and simple controls. It will also still appeal to the traditional fans of the genre, who demand an experience that is authentic and robust.

As someone who straddles the line between the casual and hardcore, I felt Flight Pro Sim offered the perfect balance between both, with a level of depth that kept me glued to my monitor for hours on end.
